Our meeting was held at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village. This is a private, independent facility on Cleveland Metroparks grounds. Maggie Watson, who is the Animal Programs Specialist at the center, spoke to us about their mission to connect people of all ages to nature. Maggie shared information about the different types of programming she leads, including a drop in program called Wonders of Wildlife, Junior Keepers and many types of field trips. In addition the center also has a planetarium that is open to the public and is known for its wildlife rehabilition. They receive thousands of animals year for rehabilition, many of which are birds found on the streets of Cleveland injured from flying into windows. The center has about 1100 permanent residents, with about 30 available to be viewed in exhibits. The program concluded with Maggie bringing out a bard owl with an injured wing.
