Opening & Traditions
- Invocation & Pledge: The meeting opened with an invocation by Joe, giving thanks for a successful Art Festival weekend, favorable weather, talented artists, and dedicated club members. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test.
- Guest Welcome: The club welcomed back former Assistant Governor Kathy Berkshire (from the Rocky River Club), who joined the meeting via Zoom.
Special Focus: Annual Art Festival Recap
The President and committee provided a preliminary recap of the weekend's Art Festival:
- Overall Success: The event was a major success with strong volunteer turnout and high patron engagement.
- Artist Feedback: An estimated 90%–95% of participating artists reported a phenomenal show.
- New Artists & Vendor Turnover: Approximately one-third of this year's vendors were brand new. About a dozen returning artists had to withdraw prior to the event due to personal emergencies or family losses.
- Volunteer & Youth Impact: High school student volunteers did an outstanding job assisting artists and managing tasks.
- Club T-Shirts: The new club shirts generated significant positive attention, with many event attendees asking if they were available for purchase.
- Community Interest: Two attendees stopped by the Rotary booth expressing interest in joining the club. The information was passed on to Amy for follow-up.
- Deeper Dive Planned: A full, comprehensive Art Festival wrap-up meeting will take place on August 19th.
Speaker Presentation: Rotary International Convention (Taipei, Taiwan)
Club members Terri and Gene presented a detailed recap of their experience at the Rotary International Convention in Taipei: (Note: the presentation is uploaded in the documents section of Club Runner.
- Scope & Attendance: Over 38,000 Rotarians attended the convention, including more than 23,000 local Taiwanese Rotarians. Terri mentioned that this was many more than she has seen in past conventions.
- Citywide Hospitality: Taipei extensively promoted the event with massive banners on City Hall, dedicated subway cars, taxi signage, and hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers.
- House of Friendship & Action Groups: Highlights included global service initiatives, such as the "Hand Wash" project in Haiti (winner of a Global Grant of Scale), peace education, and various international fellowships.
- Service Connection Highlight: Gene shared a story of connecting a volunteer organization from Perth, Australia (which manufactures 400 specialized off-road wheelchairs per month) with a Rotary group in India to help supply wheelchairs to individuals in need.
- Featured Speakers: Keynote presenters included Malala Yousafzai (advocate for girls' education) and Salome Agbaroji (US National Youth Poet Laureate), alongside remarks from the President of Taiwan and the Mayor of Taipei.
- Youth Exchange Reunion: Terri reconnected with former inbound exchange student Tubtim (from Thailand) and met her parents during the trip.
- Next Year’s Convention: The next RI Convention will take place in Barcelona, Spain.
Community Projects & Upcoming Events
- Youth Challenge 50th Birthday Service Project (Saturday, August 8th): The club needs approximately 8 volunteers to help cook burgers and serve food at the Youth Challenge site from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Two members have signed up so far; others are encouraged to register.
- Providence House Collection: Jeff Apple will be taking the diapers down to Providence House this morning to continue our donations during months that have a fifth Wednesday.
