The Rotary Club of Westlake Bay Village held its weekly Wednesday meeting on March 8, 2023. The meeting was a hybrid with 19 members meeting via zoom and in person.
Amy has been in contact with Clague Playhouse regarding a social outing around the end of May or beginning of June. After discussion regarding dates and number of tickets we would need to sell, it was decided to postpone this outing until the fall.
There will be a meeting of the Art Festival Committee Chair people on Thursday, March 16th at 6:00 PM at the Elks. We are up to over 40 artists signed up so far.
We will once again be delivering diapers to Providence House following our meeting on March 29th. Diapers can be dropped off at the library or at Patty Zinn’s office. We have collected around 1000 diapers so far, about half of what we delivered last time. Donations can be made right up to the meeting.
Speakers are booked through June. Thanks for all the suggestions, we have had some wonderful speakers.
The speech contest will be held next Thursday, March 22nd, at the Board of Education building located at 24365 Hilliard. Lisa reported that we only have one confirmed application, but we are expecting more applications soon.
Our exchange student, Onyx Wacker, has returned home following her injury on her trip to rainforest. We must provide a host family for an incoming student next fall. Please consider if you are able to host a student, or if you know of someone else who may be interested.
Applications are being accepted until May 15th for Rotary District grants. If you have a project you think may be of interest, let Terri know.
Our speaker today was our own Andrew Mangels, who gave a very spirited and informative talk on Westlake Porter Public Library. Andrew has been the Library director for the last 16 1/2 years and employs 85 people. The library sits on 11 acres and encompasses 77,000 square feet, plus the new outdoor pavilion that was recently completed.
Last year, WPPL had 240,000 visitors, 1200 programs, 1100 meetings, and a circulation of 800,000 items, including non-traditional items such as guitars, DVD players, and tools. There is also mobile printing available, a recording studio, a 3D printer and many other items.
WPPL partners with the City of Westlake, Connecting for Kids, The Farrell Foundation, and Westlake City Schools, as well as many other local organizations.
Ohio and Hawaii are the only states where a resident can go to any library in the state.
Thanks to Andrew for a great presentation, and for all he does for Rotary and the community.
