Our speaker at last week's meeting was Dr. Emily Mills from Design Interactive, a woman owned company striving to use technology to help people. She joined us via Zoom from Florida and spoke on Guiding Principles for a new Technological Landscape.
Emily introduced her topic with discussion of the industrial revolutions and the good and bad that have come with them. As an example with the 3rd industrial revolution of computing we have the benefits of cell phones and GPS that we can not imagine living without, but with that has come all the companies selling our data.
She explained the different types of extended reality - augmented reality, augmented virtuality and virtual reality. Augmented reality is virtual objects overlaid in a real world environment. Porsche has been using augmented reality for service technicians to access technical instructions hands free. Augmented virtuality is where direct objects are projected and controlled in a virtual world while virtual reality is immersion in a fully digital environment. Her company has many examples of using extended reality including using VR for combat casualty training for the military or the use of digital twins for the city of Orlando to monitor water resources or traffic flow.
Dr Mills concluded by encouraging us to be educated and informed about how emerging technology is intended to be used and how we will use in our community.
