2. Guest Presentation
- Speaker: Dr. Kyle McMillen (Bridge Rehab)
- Topic: Injury prevention, movement optimization, and long-term physical capacity.
- Key Presentation Highlights:
- Mission: Increasing physical capacity so members can continue serving others, traveling, and staying pain-free.
- Statistics: Noted that 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point, and 1 in 4 deal with shoulder or knee issues.
- Pain & Capacity: Explained that injury occurs when physical demand exceeds current capacity.
- Posture & Ergonomics: Emphasized that the "best posture is the next posture". Recommended changing positions every 30–45 minutes, optimizing desk setups, squatting/hinging close to objects when lifting, staying hydrated, and maintaining 7–8 hours of sleep.
- Exercise Recommendations: Recommended strength training twice a week (focusing on core, hips, and single-leg balance exercises) and reaching 150 minutes of weekly aerobic activity.
- Conservative Care vs. Interventions: Advised exhausting physical therapy, strength training, and mobility modifications before relying on repeated cortisone injections (which degrade cartilage/bone over time) or surgery.
- Advanced Recovery Tools: Demonstrated methods such as foam rolling, dry needling, cupping therapy, muscle scraping (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization), saunas, and cold plunges.
- Q&A Discussion: Addressed direct access to physical therapy without a physician's script, insurance reimbursement options, and the cardiovascular benefits of regular sauna use.
