Opening & Traditions
- Invocation & Pledge: The meeting opened with an invocation focusing on the gift of friendship, mutual care, and commitment to "Service Above Self". This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test.
Community Service & Volunteer Initiatives
- Providence House Diaper Drop: The club successfully delivered 1,900 diapers in the latest drop-off. This brings the club's cumulative total to nearly 35,000 diapers delivered to Providence House since late 2022.
- Youth Challenge 50th Birthday Celebration (Saturday, August 8th):
- Club members will be volunteering at the event from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Additional volunteers are needed to fill grilling and buffet serving roles. Joe Kraft and Jim Strunk indicated they could make it. Justin may join if his out-of-town trip is canceled.
- The club expanded its support by providing a $1,500 sponsorship to Youth Challenge. This includes funding full services for one child for an entire year and securing a permanent Rotary recognition sign in the Youth Challenge gymnasium.
- District Grant UH Screening Event (September 12th):
- Rotary is supporting a health screening event at the Westlake Rec Center during the Health, Wellness & Safety Day from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- Volunteers are needed for 1-hour shifts to assist with check-ins and guidance.
- Polio Baseball Game (August 19th): Members were reminded of the upcoming Guardians game supporting PolioEradication. Tickets will be distributed electronically.
Keynote Presentation: World Affairs Seminar
- Speaker: Jaden Jang, a rising senior at Westlake High School, presented a recap of his experience attending the 2026 World Affairs Seminar (WAS) in Wisconsin, which was sponsored in part by Rotary.
- Global Perspective & Leadership: Jaden described collaborating with student delegates from across the country and the world (including Britain, Germany, Seattle, and Colorado). He noted how the program significantly enhanced his public speaking, critical thinking, diplomacy, and negotiation skills.
- Special Education Focus: His seminar group evaluated global gaps in special education. They studied contrast points between developed nations and developing/conflict-affected countries, where up to 90% of special needs students lack access to education due to funding shortages and social stigmas.
- Keynote Speaker Impact: Jaden highlighted a presentation on humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan, emphasizing her core principles of safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment, and her message that vulnerability is a strength.
- Diplomacy Simulation: Delegates engaged in real-world crisis roleplay, acting as diplomats and NGOs working on solutions to combat counterfeit global trade.
- Rotary Connection: Jaden expressed his gratitude to the club and stated his desire to stay connected with Rotary and give back through local service projects.
Annual Golf Outing Planning
Following the main presentation, committee members held an organizational update regarding the upcoming Golf Outing:
- Foursomes & Registration: 8 foursomes are currently registered, with a target goal of 21 foursomes. Online registration is live and operating smoothly.
- Sponsorship Drive: The committee is prioritizing headline and corporate sponsors ($3,500 title sponsor, $1,000 corporate partner sponsors). Members are urged to leverage personal and business networks (HR, marketing, local corporate leaders).
- Raffle & Course Contests:
- Members are asked to bring $1–$5 scratch-off lottery tickets to weekly meetings to build a high-demand scratch-off raffle basket.
- Plans were discussed for putting green contests, course games, skins, and securing donated foursomes from local private country clubs (Westwood, Avon Oaks, Lakewood, Red Tail).
