Speaker - St. John Medical center
  • Paul Forthoover is community outreach manager of at Elyria and St. John Medical center
    • He was an inner city school teacher and had a gun pulled on him
  • Wayne and Paul have some overlap in some of their responsibilities
  • Our donation will go to A1C machines
    • They do have glucose and cholesterol machines, but this is a new type of machine
    • Pre-diagnosis is really important
  • Paul will have signs at each location with sponsored by Rotary
  • Staff - 10 prn, 1 teacher, 1 phlebotomist
  • UH has some money for west side organizations doing programming
  • Rivian is Lorain county drug/alcohol abuse and also beds for behavioral health - Paul is on board
  • Community outreach
    • Focus areas:
      • Schools - germ costumes and teach about hand washing
      • High schools - drug awareness, vaping; use goggles that demonstrate what impairment is like
      • Schools - Promote careers in health care
      • Senior centers - screenings
      • Businesses - flu shots and screenings
      • Library series - get physicians out of the office to give talks
      • Works with Cuyahoga Board of Health
  • Big problem coming up is to prepare for medicaid changes
    • Looks like people will only get one month warning
    • Trying to create program to help people understand the changes
    • One of the changes is that people will need volunteer hours - likely Nov/Dec
      • Think about how we can help in Rotary
    • Will be age requirements and work requirements
  • Out doing CPR and carseat installs at forestations
  • Will get dates once Paul gets the machines and trains staff on the A1C
  • Big safety event at community center - probably around July 14 and we could have a booth or volunteer
  • How many people show up at these events
    • It varies - some events only 7 people show up; others like safety day there is 100
    • Paul wants some A1C specific events and some multi screening
    • Jeff Appel asked how they attract the people that actually need the screening
